The Lower Sam Merrill Trail climbs about 410 m over 4.2 km of switchbacks from the Cobb Estate gate, almost all of it on open, south-facing slope.
The concrete steps, foundations and railway machinery on the plateau are the remains of the Echo Mountain House and the Mount Lowe Railway. Return by the same route.
